Getting Crafty!

Hello!
I haven't posted on this blog for a long long time, my apologies!  To be honest, I have been putting my creative energies into my 8-5 (7-6) job and crashing at home in the evenings.  But lately, things have changed as I re-prioritized my at home time and started making stuff again this spring.

That's not to say I hadn't been doing things but making toys for friends' kids and grandparents and bow ties for every dog I know (and a few I don't) isn't quite the same as where I was before I landed this job (which is a sweet gig as corporate gigs go).

And well, this piece....

So anyway my dear friends Jessica, Sara, and Katie have been talking about ways to force ourselves be more crafty.  We've had a few "craftspazzes" that were fun and ultimately Josh and I applied for our favorite craft fair of the year, the No Coast Craft-o-Rama field trip in Saint Anthony.  We got in under the name Secret Basement Lab Studios- Josh has been operating Secretbasementlab.com for a while now showcasing his art, writing, and putting out radio shows and podcasts.  Jessica and Sara are also in the craft fair as Partly Cloudy Collective.  Katie is busy making what is sure to be the most adorable baby ever.

Oh my gosh so soon!

So Bam! Suddenly I have a lot to do and it's awesome!  I have proper tools as of this spring, the house projects are in a good place (although, no, not complete), and a reason to drive myself to use weekends for crafting.  Korean dramas lend themselves to compulsive bow tie crocheting by the way.

Never enough...

I also started painting this spring, especially out on my deck so I'm happy to be bringing original water colors to No Coast too.

And of course as a woodworker I will have earring and necklaces available too.

But wait, there's more...

More than these too!

I spend a lot of my creative energy developing great mass market pieces with fabulous partners so it's an interesting and inspiring mindset switch to have an opportunity to work on things that are uniquely and absolutely mine.  It's like I have freedom to express myself again 100% honestly for the first time in far too long.  Josh has always been really good at keeping at his art- he draws and/or paints almost every day, but I had been slacking I'm sad to say.  I'm so excited to show off the hard work of the last few months as well as all of the ideas that have been waiting for the right outlet for a long time. I hope you can come by and see our work.  I hope the show is successful because we'd love to try again next year.

Problem Solved

With two artists in our house, my husband and I have a lot of drawing pads, rulers, triangles, and t-squares. With our basement project in full swing, our hall desk has become a clutter-fest. So I whipped up a new desk specifically for this space. With storage space for large drawing pads and everything else it puts all of our gear away while still giving us easy access to what we need. While a built-in option was definitely on the table, I decided to make a free-standing piece we could take with us should we move. I used solid ash for a great honey color and the base is steel.

This group of photos includes the Sleep Station in Walnut, Pernille Side Table and Pattisson Chair in blackened oak, the Record Cabinet in remnant birch ply, the KD (knockdown) Sofa in stained oak with orange corduroy upholstery (designed in 2001 to fit into my dorm room as well as into my two door Ford Escort for travel), and Stol 1 designed and built during my study abroad trip to Denmark.
